My Lunch Box Formula

Sandwich, fritter, sushi, omelette, felafel, fried rice, pasta, etc

Carrot sticks, cucumber, cherry tomatoes, celery, capsicum with hummus or other dips

Banana, mandarin, apple, grapes, kiwi, strawberries, blue berries etc


Ginger bread, choc chip cookies, oat cookies, banana bread etc

Water (fresh and filtered)

THINK about how you start your day and try to think about breaking through the confines of the box. Most boxed cereals have little nutrition at best and are full of processed sugars and additives at worst. Make an effort to change one day at a time so you don't get overwhelmed.  Maybe try one of the suggestions below on a particular day and see how it goes.  Remember also that some of them can double up as recess snacks, lunch or after school fillers.

Other Ideas ...

  • Egg on sourdour toast with a side of lightly fried mushies, tomatoes, avocado and baby spinach.

  • Natural yoghurt and mashed banana (or any fruit for that matter)

  • Smoothies (fruit, milk of your choice, we use rice or soy, cashews)

  • CADA - shredded coconut, apple, dates and almonds.  Blitz in the blender for a really short burst and have it with yoghurt or coyo. 

  • Simple omelettes always go down well too and if you make enough you can cut them into strips and put them in lunch boxes.


These don't have to be sugar laden or bad for you.  There is an abundance of recipes for healthy snacks out there. My favourites are here.


Lunches sometimes flow easily but sometimes not.  If you feel like a break from the sandwich, here are a few ideas.  


I tend to make a lot of vegetarian meals in my house, things like lentil curries, veggie curries, veggie pasta, soups and salads, etc as I just prefer them and they are really flexible for left-overs the next day. As I tend to just throw ingredients in a pot and don't do quantities, I don't have recipes yet, but here are a few of my favourites (I don't necessarily follow them exactly, depends on what's in the pantry)!
