Midlife - Crisis or Chrysalis?
I’ve decided to stop using the term ‘mid-life crisis’. I don’t feel like I’m in crisis. In fact, like a lot of women and men in their ‘forties’, I feel more comfortable now than when I was younger. I am more aware of who I am and where I want to go and I know that rather than this being the mid-point of the downward spiral to old age, it’s actually the beginning of a new upward spiral of opportunity and greater understanding.
My ‘middle age’ has been a time of reflection, a time of soul searching and trying to figure out what I want to do with the next part of my life. My children are getting older and more responsible and I want to embark on the next part of my life with greater understanding and knowledge as I seek out new opportunities. I am in a mid-life ‘chrysalis’. I’ve spent some time staying inside my shell, gathering my thoughts and energies, re-evaluating my life and focusing on what I want to happen next. Now, I am ready to emerge. Essentially, I’m still the same, but I’ve grown wings and I’m enjoying this new found freedom and sense of awareness.
The Chinese symbol for crisis is actually made up of two characters – Danger and Opportunity. As far as I can tell there is no inherent danger in middle age (we don’t suddenly have to fight off a lion when we get to say, 45). But there is always opportunity at every stage of life and mid-life is no exception.
Whichever way you look at it, middle-age can really represent whatever you want it to. It’s all down to your perception. Do you want to live in crisis or do you want to emerge from a chrysalis into something spectacular?
My new wings are allowing me to seek out and find opportunity in places I couldn’t get to when I was stuck on the ground. The world suddenly looks a whole lot bigger but I can access it a lot more easily. As part of my new found freedom I remember to say ‘yes’ more and especially ‘yes’ to my life more. So, I say yes when a friend offers to babysit my children or someone offers me a free ticket to a show I know I will love when previously I would have opted to just stay in because it felt easier.
Emerging on an individual level is wonderful but I like to think that society as a whole is beginning to emerge on a more global level. We are waking up to the danger that we have created on the planet and we are seeking new opportunities to change things. We are emerging into a greater consciousness….
Whichever option you decide to choose, remember that, at the end of the day, it is just that… a choice you make and a choice that can impact how you live the rest of your life from here on in.
